It's the Eighties, again.
A fashion flashback to the era that style forgot. Glamour, glitter, sequin, lame and lycra leggings. Huge shoulders and cocktail extravaganzas with puffs and peplums ( remember Dynasty, Dallas and who shot JR?). Batwing sleeves, bodycon dresses, sweater dresses, jumpsuits and lashings of lycra. Think bright, bold and OTT.
If, like me, you wore this trend the first time around, you may think that once is enough, but the good news is that this look can be adapted to suit your style and age. The 2009 version is more subtle, stylish and refined. If you are now in your late thirties or early forties, instead of following this trend slavishly, pick a piece you love, rather than going head to toe.
So, how do you adapt this fun Eighties trend? You could try layering leggings with an off the shoulder sweater dress or a wearable tulip skirt. For the last couple of seasons jumpsuits have been bang on trend and this Winter there are a large selection to choose from on the High street. A jumpsuit can look chic, with the added bonus of being comfortable. Heightened shoulders have returned with power and vengeance, but don’t worry there is not a shoulder pad in sight. A jacket or dress with volcanic and dramatic shoulders will give the illusion of a tiny waist, now we all want that, don‘t we?
With the party season in mind, there are plenty of options to choose from. You can find all over glitter and sparkle disco dresses, dynasty cocktail wear or ,alternatively for a slightly more subtle outfit, you could go for a ripped jean or harem pant and wear with a dazzling jacket. Another option is a pair of sparkly black sequin leggings that are easy to wear, can be dressed down with a piece of knitwear or up when worn with a stiletto and dressy blouse. On the High street Wallis have a great pair at just £22 ( see picture).
I will be revisiting the Eighties this season, but I must say I will not be doing the BIG hair. Once is enough!!!!
Wear it or avoid it? What are your memories of the Eighties fashion?
