How to invest in fashion

Wed, 11 February 2009 | Jo Ellis

With all this talk of buying investment pieces it's easy to let your shop-sense turn to nonsense. For a sure-fire way of making your fashion buck pay then head for new kids on the web-block Catwalk Genius.

Bringing established designers together with brand new fashion upstarts, CG opens up a whole new world of retail thrills for even the most pedestrian shopper. Because, in addition to being able to bag yourself something new to wear, there is also a delicious line-up of brilliant new designers that are looking for investors. First you choose your label and then decide how far you are willing to go to support your designer. You can start with as little as a tenner which buys you one share of a possible 5,000. When all the shares are sold a collection will be produced with you the investor taking a small share of any profit. We think it's an ace idea and so to celebrate it's arrival on our radar we've asked Director Lynsey Goldring to pick out three of her 'tips for the top'.

Sassy, sexy, stylish are the words that spring to mind when you think of Georgie W Couture.  The success of the brand so far has a lot to do with Georgie's ability to merge the world of high fashion, creative art and her love for music. One of this season's key pieces is the Polka Dot Shift (pictured) which not only channels this seasons new spotty/dotty vibe but also manages to give a firm nod towards the fashionista TV series of SS09, BBC2's Mad Men. Polka Dot Shift Dress (£145).

Love Cole by Samantha Cole is an International award-winning contemporary British Brand that draws influences from modern day trends, while retaining her own innate sense of style. Trained at the London College of Fashion, Samantha went on to work in the design room of Burberry. A key piece in this seasons Love Cole collection is the slinky-chic Black and White Striped Sequin Mini Dress (£95) which would work brilliantly with skinny jeans, or tanned legs with heels.

Finally for an eco-friendly slice of the fashion pie then check out Daughter Earth, brought to you by sisters, Laura and Katy Tanis. The girls grew up in Northern NJ in the States and have always been passionate about both wildlife and fashion.  After a trip volunteering with endangered orangutans in Borneo they decided to start a clothing line to help to raise money to protect wildlife. Daughter Earth sells eco-conscious products inspired by the natural world and part of the proceeds from each product are donated to organisations working to conserve endangered species and their habitats. Their latest range features super-cute tees like the Red Panda Raglan (£28.29).
