Training toilet - any recommendations
We're getting ready to buy our first training potty. Oh, the excitement of it all. As usual, overwhelmed by selection. Husband is convinced the Baby Bjorn training potty is the way to go, but are there any other brands we should check out?
Hi Brigid,
Weird - I was wondering the exact same thing this morning! Also looking for recommendations on books to buy as I have no idea how to even start. Will watch this thread with interest.

We got the musical potty - don't bother! I would get one that is comfortable though -the Baby Bjorn chair like one seems to have done well with friends children, especially since it has a removable bowl you can slide out and empty rather than the whole thing.
We also got sent some disposable potties called Potteaze. Don't bother - they're impossible to erect when you've got time on your hands, let alone if your little one is caught short - a far more likely outcome.
And lastly all I would say after struggling through potty training for over four months - do NOT bow down to pressure and potty train your child before they are ready. It will not work. And it will be a special kind of parenting HELL that will see you and your child in tears a lot!

Can't offer any advice on which type of potty to get but I but did recently read a good book on the subject: Toilet Training in Less Than a Day. It was written over 30 years ago but seems to get good reviews; I'll certainly be trying it with my nipper.
Also a good song to sing (courtesy of Adam Buxton) is the following (to the tune of "English Country Garden"):
"A wee or a poo,
In the potty or the loo,
Is the way to get some,
Chocolate!"

Hi Anne - We are in potty training unison! There was a note from Tabitha Twitchett is another post in the toilet training section - she trained her 2 girls in the summertime when they could run around freely without nappies. One of my other friends also trained her son this way when he was about 2 1/2 and said he was fully trained in under a week. With summer practically here, I'm starting to get ideas. But I think my son (20 months) is still too young though he has been informing us for months now of when he has pooed. Our plan is to have the potty around so he gets used to the site of it, and used to the idea of it. I also need to find a book, though I loathe most parenting books!

Hi Brigid,
Yes, I have heard summer after the second birthday is the best time too. My son (who I think you know ;-) ) just turned 20 months and I think it's too soon for him. He's not telling us yet when he's pooed but I have been wondering about getting a potty just so he can get used to the idea of it, and reading some books so I am prepared. Sounds like we are thinking along similar lines!

Hi Brigid,
Dare I mention Gina Ford??!!
I used some of the methods in her 'Potty training in a week' book and both boys were indeed potty trained in a week. Loads of praise and loads of stickers required.
But the big caveat is wait till you think they're ready.
I got a potty well before they were ready for 'training' and encouraged them to sit on it before bath time and then went into full on enthusiastic children's TV presenter mode when they did a wee or poo! I also remember spending what seemed like hours reading books to them until they 'performed'.
And if it's not happening, i.e. a crazy number of accidents beyond days six/seven, then don't be afraid to stop and re-try a couple of months later.
Good luck!

OH GOD...potty training!
Don't worry about the time of year, if your child does not want to be potty trained when the weather is great, then the winter time is fine. I too had a potty around for months before we cracked it and all it did was make him muck about with it and see it as this big thing he was supposed to do and didn't want to!
Every child is different as we all know and for my little guy a star chart and chocolate treats only when he did a wee or a poo (no other time or it doesn't work as an incentive) was the way it worked for us. He had a number of mishaps (still does every now and again) and he is now 3. He was potty trained when he was 2yrs 8 months so not early!! i started at 2.5yrs and had 3 months of exasperation. I'm with Gigi, if it doesn't work then don't feel pressured and wait til your little guy/gal is ready.
I'm not sure if anyone else had a problem but my little boy didn't like to poo in the potty but I had a few weeks where I had to put a nappy on for him to go for a poo. He knew he was needing a poo but he couldn't sit down to do it. Weeing was fine.
Gina Ford's potty training book has some good pointers, I hate her approach to child rearing but she had some good points to look out for. It was a good starting point to try her approach and she does advocate not to do it unless the child is very ready.

McLozey - What kind of training potty did you use? A brand you would recommend?

Hello there YDM
Well, we used a Boots own brand which was good and wide for sitting on. Ikea did a nice tall one which he also liked...some of them I found were too small, not enough room for my childs bottom! He is an above average size child (above 75th percentile) so as with clothing some things just aren't big enough...
I have to say that we didn't do much outdoor training though. We taught him to wee outdoors by a tree or bush (well his Dad did) and use the public toilets for having a poo in! I couldn't be bothered with carrying a potty around, although I see a lot of Mum's with potties out and about. I just hoped it would be OK, and carried extra clothing and a plastic bag for mishaps!
