The best luxury eye-creams

Fri, 18 December 2009

Much as we would love to have the bare-faced cheek of the likes of Victoria Beckham or Catherine Zeta Jones, and don our huge sunglasses, whatever the weather, we know that as civilians this is in fact unacceptable. Dropping junior off at the school gates in a giant pair of D & G's for example, will only lead to at best, becoming the subject of idle tittle tattle, and at worst, a visit from a social worker. So how to get your eye bags to vanish and your peepers to return to their pre-kids perky appearance? Surgery (not on our budget baby). The answer of course is a damned good eye cream. We woke up self-confessed knackered parent Insomniac Mummy to test out the pick of the best. And this is what she found.

Any mum of young children will probably have a tale of sleep deprivation to tell and I'm no exception. As a 30 something mum of two I'm finding that their night time antics and my raging insomnia are beginning to take their toll on my eyes. I've reached that stage in life where good old soap, water and moisturiser will no longer suffice as as skin care routine. Drastic action must be taken and I can no longer deny that I need something more.

There's no hiding the dark circles and puffy eyes anymore. Not even industrial strength concealer can mask these beauties. What I need is a miracle or in lieu of that, maybe a good eye cream would do the trick? So, selflessly, and for your benefit I've tested some top branded eye creams.

Elemis Pro-collagen Eye Renewal:

Buy online from timetospa

Price: £57 for 15 ml

The Blurb: "In just 28 days, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the delivateeye area by up to 60%."

According to Elemis this product was three years in the making and this fact alone gave me high hopes. Applied daily in the morning the cream was very light to the touch and gave an instant tingling cooling effect to the eye area, which made my eyes feel brighter. It soaked into the skin rapidly and left my eyes feeling refreshed and my under-eye area moisturised with a light sheen.

I was able to apply my usual concealer easily over the cream. It was light on my sensitive skin and my puffy under eyes certainly felt tauter. One pump of the sleek dispenser was more than enough for both eyes.

The main drawback of this product was the price. At £57 for 15ml it's certainly not cheap by any standard but worth every penny if you can afford it!

Clinique All About Eyes:

Buy online from Clinique

Price: £22 for 15ml

The Blurb: "A must-have product for all eyes. Reduces puffiness and minimises dark circles and fine lines. Lightweight, cream-gel formula actually helps hold eye make-up in place."

This little pot of light ceam gel will go a long way. Applied each morning, I only needed to pat a tiny amount around my eye controu area to feel the benefit . The cream took a few minutes to absorb fully into my skin. My under eye area was well moisturised but not greasy and there was a fairly rapid reduction in puffiness in my under-eye area. My eyes still felt tire but looked considersably less so.

Although I was impressed the reduction in eye puffiness I was a little disappointed that this product didn't make my eyes 'feel' more awake. As the cheapest of the creams I tested I would recommend it if you are looking for fast firming results.

Clarins Advanced Extra Firming Eye Contour Serum

Buy online from Clarins

Price: £32.50 each or £65 for both.

The Blurb: "Clarins Advanced Extra Firming Eye Contour Serum is an intensive, scientifically advanced anti-aging eye contour treatment for women over 40 seeking to 'lift' and revitalise the eye contour area. Helps smooth fine lines as it reduces puffiness and dark circles for a more youthful appearance.

A combination of serum for daytime and cream for night time. The daytime serum is very light and absorbs quickly into the skin leaving an invigorating tingling sensation which woke up my eyes. My under-eye area felt firmer and my eyes brighter. I had to wait a couple of minutes before applying my usual under eye concealer to avoid a build up of product. After removing my make-up each night I then applied the night time cream. The cream is much heavier than the serum and takes a little longer to absorb into the skin. My under-eye area felt deeply moisturised and slightly firmed.

Clarins market this product to women aged 40+ so as a 30 something I wonderered what effect, if any, these products would have. Used together I was more than impressed. At £65 for the two it is a big expense, however so little is required for each application if your purse strings can stretch I think the cost is almost justified.
