Top picks for kids

Wed, 16 December 2009

Okay you've probably spent the equivalent of the national debt of Dubai on your children this Christmas. But...in case you're still searching for some jolly inspiration, here's our pick of the coolest gifts for shorties this season.

Unisex toys for 3 - 6 years

If the words... A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood.. ring a bell with you then you'll know that anything Gruffalo themed will raise a big smile on your child's face. Trunki have cornered the market in fun luggage for kids and their limited edition Gruffalo Trunki (£39.99) does it all, (presumably with purple prickles all over it's back!).

If that's not your baggage, then what about a cuddly teddy then? We found these adorable recycled ones at Biome Lifestyle (£35). The material is sourced from charity shops, the insides are stuffed with hypo-allergenic filling and each bear is lovingly handmade by English craftsfolk.

Girl stuff - when not all pink stinks

Your little princesses might be holding out for a pile of pink plastic but what about prodding their imagination at the same time as getting a toy that won't be landfill next Spring. Tree House Blue a cheeky little online shop with brilliant taste stocks the delectable Princes and the Pea with storybook (£59.95). The bed comes with a pink princess and lots of layers of quilts, and an obstinate little pea to complete the story.

If you're handy with your hands you could of course purchase the book on it's own and make the rest, and actually taking the time to make it with your daughter (or son) would probably be extra special too. Just a thought.

For girls who like pretty things to wear, check out the stunning knits from eco-designers Smith and Coates's cosy knits. Handmade from recycled jumpers right here in the UK. The tunics in particular are.....too delicious for words. Well, almost. All the knitwear is machine washable and the tunic (£40) is perfect in place of a coat on a cool day.

Boys who like toys...

We know it's not right but most boys adore trucks, trains, cars, sticks, fighting and...messing about. So before they turn to the dark side (aged eight and upwards most will be obsessed with getting a vile computer console thingy) make the most of their active side and encourage that obsessioon with all things vehicular.

Nigel's Eco Store has a great Eco-Excavator (£14.99) for ages 3 and up. Battery free and made from recycled pine and plastic this is great for the imagination, and picking up things and putting them down again. It's okay, they like it.

For a hard to beat toy for the younger men-folk then getting them a ride-on is always a good bet.   My First Carl Classic Ride On Car (£65) from Kids Toy World is not just suitable for ages 1-3, but will also look pleasingly retro in your beautiful home too. It's what they call a win, win.
